Once you have booked your session and we have chosen a location the next important step is deciding WHAT TO WEAR. Here are 5 Rules to follow when deciding what to wear for your upcoming photo session. You can click here to find out more tips on what to wear for Newborn Sessions.
Rule #1: DO NOT TRY AND MATCH COLORS!
It’s great to coordinate but what you do not want to do is make everything match perfectly. This allows for endless creativity! It’s best to choose 2-3 colors that work well together. It’s also best to avoid large prints, patterns, logos and any writing on clothing. Neutral Color Schemes are always my favorite!
Solid neutral colors that are paired with each other look spectacular! If you want to achieve a dreamy look, choose neutral colors, off-whites and soft tones to achieve that look. If you are wanting to achieve a dramatic look you may choose colors that are more bright and colorful, it looks best to have one or two members in the photo wearing a bright or bold color or pattern while the others are more neutral.
Rule #2: ACCESSORIZE
If you want your focus to be on you and your attire you should minimize accessories. They may take away the spotlight from your outfit. However, if you would like your accessories to make the statement, wearing solid clothing with an accessory is an excellent choice.
Ideas for girls accessories: Headbands, bows, bracelets, necklaces, scarfs, belts, cardigans, etc.
Ideas for boys accessories: Belts, suspenders, ties, hats, etc.
Rule #3: SHOES CAN MAKE OR BREAK AN OUTFIT
I personally love bare feet photo shoots for younger children. When choosing shoes for your photo shoot please avoid tennis shoes and choose shoes that are appropriate to the season and the outfit.
Rule #4: LAYER IT UP
I recommend finding outfits with a lot of visual interest. That means to look for clothing with lots of textures, ruffles and layers. Especially for children, lots of layers look great! You can add a cardigan over tops or leggings under skirts and dresses. Different textures such as lace or denim can also add some visual interest.
Rule #5: KEEP IT COMFORTABLE
This is especially true for kids always try to keep comfort in mind when choosing outfits. Make it fun for your children but don’t forget they are still kids. Avoid clothing that is too tight, itchy fabric or anything that will make your child uncomfortable during their session. I always try to capture families as they really are so its best to choose outfits that you will feel comfortable and confident wearing. Don’t stress or over think your outfits, my main focus of all of my photo shoots is on you and your precious family! I am happy to help so please ask me if you need help with deciding what to wear.
